MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota State Patrol troopers practice delivering babies in training academies, and one who just joined the patrol and the class put it to use on the Fourth of July weekend.

Probationary trooper Garrett Klein was on duty with his trooper Jonathan Lehman when the two received the call just before 6:30 a.m. on the 4th about a woman in labor along Interstate 94 in Minneapolis. When they arrived, the mother’s contractions were just a minute apart and soon after, the baby was born.

Klein graduated from the Minnesota State Patrol academy in May and is just seven weeks into his field training. In addition to training for traffic stops, pursuits and field sobriety tests, cadets go through first responder training at the academy, which includes baby delivery.

Lehman graduated from the academy May of 2015.
