When I enrolled in WITC's marketing program in 2005, I certainly wasn't expecting politics to be a part of my curriculum. When my instructor, Mary Tripp, announced one of my classes would involve taking part in Superior Days, I was a little surprised.

My classmates and I spent the better part of a semester, with Mary, learning about the history of our government, the grassroots beginnings of Superior Days and what to expect while lobbying in Madison. We attended planning meetings and created a communication plan for the Superior Day's Youth Reception, all of which lead to a three-day trip to the state capitol. Being part of Superior Days was an eye-opening experience and, because of Mary's passion and dedication, I have a better understanding of how our political system works and also how it affects me -- the average citizen.

Mary Tripp was the most demanding, dedicated and enthusiastic instructor I had while in college. She demanded 100 percent from her students; however, she demanded just as much, or more, from herself. I believe her dedication is one of the primary reasons I was able to find a great job in my field straight out of college, which is a challenge for any graduate.

Although Mary is a teacher, she has been part of Superior Days for 12 years and is no stranger to the political world. So, as Mary would say, do your research. Find out which of the candidates you think will do the best job for northern Wisconsin. Vote on Sept. 9.
