The Parks and Recreation Division conducts its annual Tribute Tree plantings Friday.
The Tribute Tree program was launched by the Tree Board in 2001 as a way for individuals and organizations to honor someone or something with a lasting legacy, the planting of a tree on public property.
Beginning at 10:30 a.m., city crews plant a Tribute Tree purchased by Marianne Peters in memory of her husband, Floyd Peters Sr., in honor of Father's Day 2007. The tree, a maple, will be planted on the boulevard at 2308 Missouri, and represents the third tree purchased by Marianne Peters since the program began.
At 11:30 a.m., the 60th Tribute Tree donated by Murphy Oil USA will be planted at Gouge Park, located between 12th Avenue East and 13th Avenue East and East Third Street and East Fourth Street.
"Murphy Oil USA offered 20 Tribute Trees this spring with plantings in Gouge Park and along the East Fifth Street corridor. The city is so pleased with Murphy's commitment to beautifying East End," said Mary Morgan, city forester.

Tribute Trees can be purchased by an individual or organization to pay tribute to a person, place, event, occasion or idea. The purchaser can choose from four species, at a cost of $150 per tree, and have the tree planted in the neighborhood of their choice. The city plants and maintains the tree, which is guaranteed for one year. The donor, or the donor's recipient, receives a custom Tribute Tree certificate from Mayor Dave Ross.
