The Superior High School tennis team finished second in the Lake Superior Conference last year with a record of 7-2. If the Spartans want to equal that impressive mark, they're going about it the right way as they have opened the 2007 season with wins over Hermantown and Duluth Denfeld.

"This is a very competitive conference this year," SHS coach Pete Conley said. "There will be a lot of close matches. We have a goal of first or second (in the conference)."

Nine starters return for the Spartans, among them Cody Johnson (LSC first team), Chad Erickson, Chris Berchild, Bart Bailey and James LaPine. Eric Brew, who advanced to the sectional finals last year, graduated last year. Also graduated from the team this year is Dustin James.

Conley still thinks the team has plenty of depth though, and he is counting on that depth to be a strength for the Spartans.

"All (of the players) are capable of starting," Conley said. "We have a team that is very strong all the way through the lineup."

The team may have depth, but it doesn't have as much varsity experience as Conley would prefer.

The Spartans are not setting their goals low this year, but they are looking at the season from a realistic point of view.

"The conference (title) will be a tough achievement," Conley said. "It will be won by either Cloquet, Marshall, Hermantown or Superior."

The Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1 win over Duluth Denfeld Monday at the Wheeler tennis courts in Duluth.

"Everyone played very well," Conley said. "The doubles teams really looked good -- they only lost a total of two games for all three matches."

Notching singles wins were C. Johnson, Erickson and Bailey, while helping in sweeping the doubles matches were Berchild and LaPine, and Tim Smith, and Adam, Johnson and Corbin Walsh.

The Spartans are at Duluth Marshall at 4:15 p.m. today.

"We put together a real good match going into one of our toughest matches against Marshall," Conley said. "It's better going into that match with confidence. This is a year where a number of teams can take the conference but you have to play your best every time you step on the court."
