The Superior High School boys tennis team finished third of eight teams at the Eau Claire North Invitational over the weekend. Teams included Ashland, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire North, Holmen, Superior, La Crosse Logan, Sparta and Wausau West.
"We played real well during this tournament," SHS coach Pete Conley said. "We ended up in third place, and that was with us missing our No. 2 singles player (Chad Erickson). We just bumped everyone up and they got us some crucial match points."
It was Superior's best finish ever in the tournament, according to Conley. He also said the tournament results were certain to help the team when the time comes for seeding for the sub-sectional tournament.
"I was very proud of our play during the tournament; it was extremely hot during the tournament and they played three matches back to back," Conley said. "They all played with determination, even when they were almost out of energy. The last match came down to who wanted it more, and these guys simply wanted it more."
SPARTAN SPIN: Erickson is attending DECA nationals in Florida. ... Superior hosts Duluth East today and Hermantown Thursday. Both matches begin at 4:15 p.m.
