A Duluth teen remained in critical condition in a Duluth hospital Tuesday, the day after an all-terrain vehicle crash north of the city.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday identified the teen as 13-year-old Logan James Rautio.
Rautio was airlifted Monday to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth following the crash in Fredenberg Township.
Rautio was riding a three-wheeler at the end of his driveway, Sgt. Erik Peterson told the News Tribune on Tuesday, sliding into a snowbank. Rautio was thrown from the ATV, Peterson said, and into a metal post or junction box near the home on the 6500 block of Stevens Road, near Island Lake.
Rautio had only been riding a few minutes prior to the crash, Peterson said, and his siblings reported the crash. Rautio was not wearing a helmet but did have a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources ATV Safety Program completion certificate and had been operating ATVs since he was 5, Peterson said.
