Superior officials seek ideas for comprehensive planning

Superior officials are working on their update to the city’s comprehensive plan.

The plan sets a vision for the next 20 years and defines goals and action steps to guide development decisions.

There are nine elements included in the planning process: housing; economic development; land use; transportation; utilities and community facilities; intergovernmental cooperation; agricultural, natural and cultural resources; coastal resources; and hazard mitigation.

The planning process will explore existing conditions for each element and identify goals and strategies to guide decisions for the next 20 years. The document will be used by the city council, plan commission, residents, city staff and stakeholders.

“We are asking the citizens of Superior to design the future of their city,” Mayor Jim Paine said in a news release. “The comprehensive plan sets the direction of all of our future development. We need your help to design a city that works for everyone.”

To help gather public input, city officials have set up a web-based survey to gather initial ideas at www.surveymonkey.com/r/Superior2040 . Additional engagement activities will be planned throughout the process.

“The input that the Superior community provides during this comprehensive planning process will be the building blocks for city policy decisions going forward for the next 20 years,” said Jason Serck, economic development, port and planning director. “It is important that we hear what the citizens have to say about the city’s positive attributes as well as its challenges so that we can put a plan together that will help shape our future.”
