Superior investigates sewage overflow

A sewage overflow occurred last week at the city of Superior’s main wastewater treatment plant, 51 E. First St.
The overflow lasted about 45 minutes on March 31 and 30 minutes on April 1, dumping about 375 gallons of wastewater.
Superior Environmental Services Division personnel responded and stopped the overflow, and continue to monitoring the situation. All necessary steps are being taken to limit any public health hazard or potentially harmful effect on the environment, according to Jon Shamla, wastewater treatment engineer and operations manager for Environmental Services.
Further investigation is underway to determine the cause.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was notified. New regulations require public notification of such events.
Residents should avoid contact with treatment facility overflow to avoid exposure to disease-causing organisms.
