Eighth-grader Hailey Kontny isn't even in high school yet, but she is drawing college interest for her basketball skills. The Superior Middle School student was a member of the eighth-grade girls traveling basketball team that recently won the Division 1 girls state tournament, and she will play basketball this summer with the Team Wisconsin U14 Amateur Athletic Union team.

"She's a phenomenal player," said eighth-grade teammate Missy Toland. "She will go places."

One place Hailey might have a chance to go is the Big 10 Conference. She recently received a verbal offer from the University of Michigan to play basketball for the Wolverines in the 2014-15 season. The university contacted Superior High School girls basketball coach Dan Schulz, who then put the school in contact with Hailey's parents.

"Hailey has a deep passion for the game and it shows in her work ethic; she is in the gym every day," said Dave Kontny, Hailey's father and coach of the Superior High School boys basketball team. "She comes home from school, does her school work, goes to volleyball, goes to the gym and then comes home and studies for her exams the next day."

After varsity boys basketball games, Hailey could often been found shooting with friends on the high school court as she waited for her father to finish talking to his team.

"I've had a lot of basketball in my life because of my dad," Hailey said. She's happy to carry on the family name in basketball and hopes to lead the Spartan girls to a state tournament berth before she looks ahead to college.

"The best thing about Hailey is she is so unselfish, and she will do whatever it takes to help her team win. She hates to lose," Kontny said.
