Two goals and an assist by Mitch Kontny helped the Superior High School boys hockey team defeat Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 5-3 Tuesday night at Wessman Arena.
The Spartans improve to 10-4 overall on the season while the Lumberjacks fall to 4-13-1.
After combining to score just one goal in the first period, the second period was a lot different as the Spartans and CEC put the puck away six times in the second period tonight at Wessman Arena.
Fortunately for the Spartans, they scored four of the goals to take a 4-3 lead into the third period.
Superior outshot CEC 14-2 in the first period and still found itself trailing 1-0 as Corbin Morse scored with an assist from Ethan Johnson.

The Spartans tied it 11 seconds into the second period and took a 2-1 lead three minutes later.
Kontny put home his fifth goal of the season with assists from Pat Dalbec and Taylor Leuthner after Superior won the face off to start the second period.
Leuthner then gave Superior a 2-1 lead with help from Dalbec and Sean Hoff.
CEC tied it back up at 2-2 on Colton Roy's power-play goal at 4:36, but Superior regained a one-goal lead 12 seconds later on Kontny's unassisted goal.
Tyler Plunkett gave the Spartans a 4-2 lead at 9:15, but CEC's Morse scored his second goal of the game to get CEC within 4-3 heading into the third period.
The Spartans sealed the victory with Dalbec's goal into an empty net with 44 seconds remaining.
Joel Pettingill, who had just one save in the first period, finished with 23 saves to pick up the win in goal for Superior.
Jordan Thompson had37 saves for CEC.

The Spartans are back in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Duluth Denfeld. It will be the first appearance for Superior in the new Heritage Center in West Duluth.
