Summer in Lake Nebagamon is exploding with family activities beginning with a bang the July 4th weekend. The festivities start with a 5 mile run/walk proceed with a parade and dance and end with free games for kids.
The annual "Dragin' Tail Run/Walk" sponsored by the Lake Nebagamon Volunteer Fire Department will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. The "Dragin' Tail" is now run on a certified course. Race day registration will be accepted from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at the village auditorium, 11596 E. Waterfront Dr. A registration fee of $8 is charged.
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded for men and women runners in a variety of age classes, including for youngsters 14 and younger and seniors older than 70. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to men and women walkers. There will also be a prize for the overall winner in the run.
The July 4th parade begins at 4 p.m. and will proceed through the downtown streets. Those same streets will come alive from 8 p.m. to midnight when "Phoenix Rising" plays for the annual July 4th dance sponsored by Bridge's Indianhead Tavern and the Waterfront Bar and Grill.
Miss Nebagamon will be crowned at 9 p.m. The crown goes to the young lady who sells the most celebration buttons for $1 each. Contestants are Hannah Cottew and Jessie Treviranus.

The Lake Nebagamon Lions Club, local businesses and organizations will present the annual fireworks display at 10 p.m. at the public beach. The weekend climaxes with free games for little children at 1 p.m. Sunday on the green behind the auditorium. The games are sponsored each year by Rose's Bakery and Coffee Shop and the Waterfront Bar and Grill.
Swimming lessons for children will be offered from July 6-15 at the public beach. The lessons are sponsored by the Kids In Nebagamon organization, the Lions Club and the Nebagamon Lake Association. The classes run 4-6:30 p.m. each day and will be divided by age and skill level. Information about the classes may be obtained by calling Jodi Karich at (715) 374-3346.
The Lake Nebagamon Garden Club will hold its annual Garden Tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 11, beginning at the village auditorium. Tickets are $8 and include a continental breakfast at the auditorium before the tour, visits to five area gardens and many door prizes. Tickets will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. July 22, for a tour of the extensive gardens and greenhouse at the Maple home of Dick Coda, master gardener. Carpooling is recommended and those attending may meet at the village parking lot on Waterfront Drive at 6:30 p.m.
Trinity Lutheran Church, 11416 E. 1st St. N., will offer a Pancake Breakfast beginning at 10 a.m. at the church Sunday, July 12. It's an all you can eat brunch and tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children from 6 to 12 years old. Children 5 and under eat free. The Trinity Vacation Bible School will be July 27-31 with the theme "Discovery Canyon-Discovering God's Word." Children from age 3 to sixth grade are welcome and may register at (715) 374-2812.
A fundraiser for repairing and upgrading the Lake Minnesuing Park runs 6-11 p.m. July 18, at the auditorium. It features a Rod Stewart Tribute. Information and tickets, priced at $20, may be obtained from Robin Arbuckle, (715) 374-2876.
The first of the free summer concerts sponsored by the Nebagamon Community Association features the Jarvenpaa Finnish Singers at 7 p.m. July 13, at the auditorium. Other free Monday night concerts will showcase the Superior Singers on July 20, and the Chequamegon Cloggers and magician Jacob Roeber Aug. 3.
A free guest lecture series has been arranged this summer in Lake Nebagamon. The lectures begin at 6:30 p.m. at the village auditorium. The first in the series, "Keeping the Fires Burning, A History and Memoirs of Camp Nebagamon," features readings and recollections by Bernard and Sally Stein, former owners of Camp Nebagamon for Boys. A book signing and wine and cheese reception follow. A percentage of the book sales at this event benefit the Imogene McGrath Memorial Library. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The second of the series, "Alternative Travel: See the World in a Different Way," features Ann Parker giving a presentation on Elderhostel and Jan Conley talks about Servas, an international travelers' organization.
Children's story time at the McGrath Library, 11622 E. Hwy. B, continues all month at 1:30 p.m. each Wednesday. The series ends Aug. 5 and will wrap up with a potluck picnic at the library at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 12. There will be a visit from the Zoomobile from the Lake Superior Zoo.
The annual concert by the Duquesne University Tamburitzans will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 10, at the auditorium. This year's concert will be especially meaningful for the local audience since it will be the first appearance in the troupe by Kathryn Gallagher of Lake Nebagamon. One of the highlights of the summer will be the Nebagamon Community Association's Classic Car Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 2, on Waterfront Drive downtown. It will be followed by the annual Kids In Nebagamon "e bay at the beach" auction and wine tasting 3-6 p.m. at the auditorium. The Nebagamon Community Association holds a corn roast that day and the Lions Club serves Wisconsin brats for downtown visitors.
A farmer's market is offered from 8 a.m. to noon each Wednesday in front of Sharon's LakeView Café, 6884 S. Lake Ave. The market continues through September.
