The 9 a.m. ceremony includes a proclamation by Mayor Dave Ross and a ceremonial tree planting. Three large autumn blaze maples will be planted by the students and Target team members. The trees have been sited to complement the school sign, located just south of the main entrance.

The Arbor Day ceremony is a key component for the city's. designation as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. A community must meet four standards to qualify as a Tree City USA: the city must have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.
