Stanley J. Cerys

Stanley J. Cerys, 83, lifelong Superior resident, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at home with his children by his side after a long battle with cancer.

Stanley J. Cerys, 83, lifelong Superior resident, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at home with his children by his side after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Superior on Nov. 29, 1924, to Peter and Agnes (Mizinski) Cerys.

Stanley graduated from Central High School in 1943 and was then drafted into the United States Army where he served overseas until his honorable discharge in 1946.

He married Jean Marie Running on Oct. 26, 1957, at St. Stanislaus Church in Superior, where he was an active member until the parish closed. He then became a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Church for his remaining years. He also was a member of the VFW, Eagles and Polish Clubs.

He retired from the Superior Police Department as captain in 1980 after 30 years of service and also worked for the railroad during that time. He also operated the East End Salvage for more than 30 years until 2006.

Stanley enjoyed his bowling during his younger years, was an avid Packers fan and enjoyed watching various sports including golf. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his dogs Meeka and Blue.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Jean, brother, Walter Simzek and a sister, Helen Kosinski.

He is survived by three sons, Daniel (Phyllis), Melrose, Mass., Steven, Oklahoma City, Okla. and Thomas Cerys, Superior; two daughters, Catherine Cerys and Nancy (Paul) Kauti, both of Superior; four grandchildren, Ashley, Chelsea, Paul and Garrett and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank St. Luke's Hospice for all their support and care and a special thanks to Anita Guzzo for all of her care.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. Sunday in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Ave., with a 7 p.m. scripture service. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
