Stampede drop opener

The Twin Ports Stampede lost to the South Metro Dragons 23-12 Sunday to open the 2010 season. The game, played at Minnetonka High School, was a preseason match for both Northern Elite Football League member teams.

The Stampede are now 0-1 overall on the year, while the Dragons improved to 2-0 overall. The NEFL regular season gets underway Saturday.

Wide receiver LaShawn Bullock scored first for the Stampede Sunday on a 60-yard pass from quarterback David White in the first quarter. The extra point was wide. A Dragons field goal cut the lead to 6-3, but the Stampede put together a drive, capped by running back Hollis Dukes' 11-yard scamper, to make the score 12-3. The two-point try was unsuccessful.

The Dragons struggled offensively until the fourth quarter, when they benefited from two Stampede turnovers and took the lead.

The Dragons scored on a 5-yard run by Sean Hall on the first turnover. The extra point was wide, leaving the score 12-9, but the second Stampede turnover led to a 15-yard run by Riza Mahmoud to put the Dragons in front. Quarterback Willie Staple also ran in the two-point conversion to give South Metro a 17-12 advantage.

The Stampede turned the ball over once more later in the quarter, allowing the Dragon defense to score on a 42-yard interception return by safety Linnell Hollis.

The Stampede are back in action Saturday to face the Rochester Giants at Rochester Technical and Community College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game can be heard locally on WEBC 560 the Fan.
