Minor events of the Superior Area Men's Bowling Association tourney have been completed. Bill and Dave Johnson won the doubles competition with a total of 1,320. Bryant won the championship in the Superior Hoop Club's Seventh-Eighth Grade Basketball League's tournament by downing Central Junior 51-34. Jay Anderson led Bryant with 21 counters while Mike Callaway and Brian Pahos scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. Troy Paquette led the losers in scoring with 16 points. McCaskill, behind Paul Laughlin's 14 tallies, defeated Pattison 41-22 for third place. Washington took consolation honors in a 33-21 clash with East Junior. The UW-Superior basketball team served notice to the WSUC: There ain't no free lunch in Superior any longer. The Yellowjackets made it clear with a rousing 67-63 win over the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds before a home crowd of more than 2,000 fans. The win was the 'Jackets' 17th in 25 starts and brought their conference record to 11-5, forcing a playoff with the Blugolds (tied for second in the WSUC) to determine who will join UW-Oshkosh in the NAIA district playoffs. The 'Jackets did it by double and triple-teaming seven-footer Gib Hinz, holding him to 20 points. UWS was led by 30 points fired in by unstoppable Dave Cochran. (1978)
