Spartans swimmers set for state

Reaching the state swimming meet is a lofty dream that is out of the reach of most high school swimmers, but for Superior's Tricia Nye it was the goal of her senior season.

Reaching the state swimming meet is a lofty dream that is out of the reach of most high school swimmers, but for Superior's Tricia Nye it was the goal of her senior season.

So when she was diagnosed with walking pneumonia the weekend before the sectional meet, the challenges of making it to Saturday's 33rd Annual WIAA girls swimming and diving championships at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison became even more difficult to overcome.

But a slight switch and some positive thoughts have not only Nye, but two entire Spartan relay teams headed down to the state swimming finals Saturday in Madison.

"It's a tremendous honor to qualify because it is so tough to make it to state," Spartans coach Mike Pahlen said. "It's a tremendous honor for the kids to be competing against the elite athletes in the state and to go down and compete in the 'big show.'
