The Superior High School boys basketball team hadn't played for about seven or eight days when they took the floor against Hermantown Tuesday night, but the Spartans showed they haven't lost their form as they won 74-42.

"I thought we came out a little sluggish to start, but we picked up after that," SHS coach Dave Kontny said.

Superior once again used its stifling defense to build a lead in the first half. The Spartans held Hermantown to just 12 points in the opening period while scoring 32 of their own to open up a 20-point lead at halftime.

In the second half, Hermantown more than doubled its offensive output, scoring 30 points, but Superior continued to attack and added 42 more points for the 74-42 win.

The Spartans got scoring from 13 different players, three of whom finished in double figures. Senior Garrett Wessberg led the way with 15 points.

"Wessberg really had a nice game," Kontny said. "He had 15 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and five steals. That's a good night for a big guy."

Also scoring in double figures for the Spartans were Andy Heytens with 12 points and Joel Lindberg with 10. Josh Kimmes added eight points and Chris Blake finished with seven. Dylan Shatto and Brent Engstrom each scored four, Jake Turkowski had three and Zach Colvin, Luke Wohlwend, Zach Fredricks and Jake Lindberg all added two points apiece.

Superior hosts rival Duluth East at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
