CROOKSTON, Minn, -- The Superior High School boys hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with the Crookston Pirates Friday night at the one-week old Crookston Sports Center.
The Spartans were scheduled to be in action again Saturday in Crookston, but the Jamestown (N.D.) Bluejays called the game because of potential poor weather conditions.
In Friday's game, Superior took a 2-0 lead in the first period on power-play goals by Mitch Kontny and Kellen McCoshen, but the Pirates (6-14-2) answered with goals in the second and third periods. The teams settled for the tie after a scoreless OT.
After failing to manage a shot on goal for the first 13 minutes of the game, Superior made its first one count as Kontny's shot made it through traffic from the point with an assist from Chris Bishop.
The Pirates quickly took another penalty and the Spartans struck again just 2:20 later as Kontny fed McCoshen with a pass in the right circle and he snapped off a quick shot that beat Pirate goalie Nick Biermaier. Bishop picked up his second assist on the tally.

Superior missed out on two more power-play attempts in a second period then saw Crookston make it a 2-1 game with 1:51 remaining as Alex Edevold beat Spartan goaltender Joel Pettingill top shelf with a wrister from just inside the blue line.
The Pirates tied the game at 2-2 just 56 seconds into the third period as Mark Bittner scored with an assist from Nick Regeimbal.
Each team had a power-play chance in overtime, including Superior for the final two minutes of the game.
The Spartans (11-7-1) will be back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ashland.
