Spartans cruise to 10th win in a row

DULUTH -- Reserves Kyle Wilander and Jordan McDonald led the Superior High School baseball team to its 10th straight victory Thursday afternoon at UMD's Bulldog Park as the Spartans defeated Duluth Marshall 14-2 in five innings.

Wilander, a senior, got his first start of the season at third base and went 2-for-2 with five RBIs, while McDonald was the winning pitcher and went 1-for-2 offensively with two RBIs.

McDonald allowed five hits with four strikeouts and one walk in his first varsity victory of the season.

Grant Rindal added two hits and an RBI; Taylor Olson doubled and knocked in two runs; Nick Sitek doubled, singled and scored four runs; and Kellen McCoshen and John Edwards singled for the Spartans, now 10-1 on the year.

For Marshall, Lukas Harkonen tripled; Ian Zenner had an RBI single; Zach Scalzo, Josh Serre and Anthony Cotter singled; and Anders Broman had an RBI groundout.

The Spartans jumped on the Hilltoppers with a six-run first inning. Olson started the game with a double and scored on Rob Dembroski's groundout. Rindal followed with a two-run single, and Wilander and McDonald hit RBI singles.

It went to 8-0 in the second inning as McCoshen walked and scored on an error and McDonald walked with the bases loaded.

The Spartans scored four more runs in the third as Wilander walked with the bases loaded, Sitek and Nolan Holcombe scored on wild pitches and Wilander scored on Olson's sac fly to center.

After Marshall scored its runs in the fourth, SHS got them back in the fifth on Wilander's two-run single.

Things will get tough for the Spartans Saturday when Chippewa Falls comes to town with an 11-3 record. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

The Cardinals are coming off 12-5 and 15-5 losses to Eau Claire North, which is 9-0 on the year.

SPARTAN SPIN: Dylan Ramage and Ryan Myhre are scheduled to pitch Saturday for Superior. ... Holcombe was hit by a pitch for the fifth time this season in the second inning Thursday. ... Olson's double was his team-leading fifth of the year. ... Heading into Thursday's game McCoshen was Superior's leading batter with a .517 average. ... The SHS JV (7-4) defeated Marshall 25-4. Paul Edwards got the win in relief of Chase Matson, who pitched the first inning. Dane Sislo also pitched a scoreless inning of relief. The Spartans had 20 hits, including three apiece from Andy Glonek, Nik Mattson and Devon Robinson. Edwards, Jordan Hughes, Spencer Urban, Steve Riley and Colton Yepma had two hits each.
