Spartans 2nd, Tigers 6th in Zosel volleyball tournament

The Superior High School volleyball team finished second in Saturday's Heidi Zosel Invitational volleyball tournament at Northwestern High School.

The Spartans went 3-0 in pool play with wins over Amery, Ironwood and Hudson before losing to Washburn in the championship match. The Castle Guards defeated Superior 25-21, 25-21.

"I was really pleased with how the girls played," SHS coach Lori Keute said. "They stayed focused, and the games had a nice flow to them. We didn't seem to get rattled and lose confidence at all throughout the day.

Washburn swept its way to the title by defeating Northwestern, Luck and Drummond in pool play.

Superior's pool scores were 25-12, 25-7 over Amery; 25-14, 25-8 over Ironwood; and 25-16, 25-14 over Hudson.

"Beating Hudson, after having such a close game with them at their tournament, will really help us in our seeding to have beaten a BRC team twice," SHS coach Lori Keute said. "We're really pulling for a higher seed so we can have our first playoff game at home."

Spartan stats for the day were: Jessica Lindstrom, 30 kills, 12 blocks and 14 digs; Maddie Keute, six ace serves and 19 digs; Taylor Johnson, 10 ace serves, 12 kills and seven blocks; Ally Keute, six ace serves, seven kills and eight digs; Ali Wainionpaa, 10 ace serves, 75 set assists and 10 digs; Miranda Flynn, five kills; and Dani Magdzas, nine ace serves, 16 kills, five blocks and six digs.

The host Tigers finished sixth on Saturday. In pool play they lost to Washburn, 2-0 (25-11, 25-14); defeated Drummond, 2-0 (25-12, 25-16); and lost to Luck, 2-0 (25-14, 25-22).

Northwestern then lost to Amery in the fifth-place game, 2-0 (25-20, 25-23).

Leading the Tigers on the day were Ally May, 30 kills and seven digs; Sarah Miller, 25 digs; Aliex Friend, 18 set assists; and Brooke Pearson, 12 set assists.

The Tigers (3-13) are at Hayward Thursday while the Spartans are at Duluth Marshall Tuesday and host Rice Lake Thursday. All three matches begin at 7 p.m.
