The Superior High School volleyball team went 4-0 at the Hudson Invitational on Saturday.

After defeating Menomonie 2, Somerset and Prescott in pool play, the Spartans defeated the host Raiders 2-1 (22-25, 27-25, 16-14) in the championship match.

"I can't recall the last time Superior was in the championship match at the Hudson Invitational, but I'm sure it's been a few years," SHS coach Lori Keute said. "It was certainly exciting for the players and the Superior fans that came to watch. We had a pretty decent crowd there; about 20 fans. We headed to the HS gym from the middle school not knowing who we would be playing: Menomonie 1 or Hudson. All the girls were hoping it would be Hudson. We were pleased to see Hudson warming up on the championship court.

In the championship match the Spartans got eight kills and 11 digs from Jessica Lindstrom, six kills and six digs from Ally Keute, 16 set assists and four digs from Ali Wainionpaa, nine kills from Dani Magdzas and six kills from Amanda Larson.

The Spartans jumped out to an 8-0 lead on Hudson in the first set.

"We maintained the lead for a while and then struggled a bit with their quick attack in the middle and some errors later in the set," Keute said. "They took the lead and we couldn't get it back but the most important thing the girls showed was their focus under pressure. We worked hard not to panic in the second set and kept a positive attitude even when we found ourselves struggling with their quick offense."

The third and deciding set was back and forth with both teams putting up some great attacks.

"Our combined average hitting percentage of .300 for all three sets was a big part of our success in the match," Keute said. "Hudson put up a nice attack, but we matched it. It certainly was an exciting day and we are anxious to get back into our regular season play."
