The Superior High School girls swimming and diving team won only three of 12 events against a strong Grand Rapids team, losing 119-67 to open the 2006 season Tuesday at the SHS pool.

"I was pleased with the team's performance, we are rebuilding after losing seven of last year's top nine scorers to graduation," SHS coach George Lehman said. "In many events, we were just a stroke behind the talented Rapids swimmers."

Senior Kristy Liebaert and freshman Anna Anklam took first and second in the 50 freestyle for the Spartans' best showing.

Jackie Doyle, Lindsey Splinter, Karen VanOvermeiren and Calla Johnson won the 200 medley relay by .08 seconds, Splinter also earned top honors in the 100 breaststroke and Calla Johnson swam a strong 500 free, taking second place.

Captains for this year's team are Liebaert, Nora Radtke and Johnson. Other returning senior letterwinners include Kara Peterson, Jackie Rehl, Rachel and Rebecca Schorr and Bizzy Cowling.
