SPARTAN ROUNDUP: SHS golfers in third place; soccer team splits games

The Superior High School boys golf team is in third place after the first of four Lake Superior Conference golf meets Wednesday at Ridgeview Country Club in Duluth.

Hermantown took the early lead with a team score of 162, followed by Duluth Denfeld, 167; and Superior, 173.

Joel Pettingill paced the Spartans with a 40. Rob Kraft and Andy Heytens were next with 44s, followed by Mitch Kontny, 45; Chris Rochon, 46; and Brandon Burd, 47.

Hermantown's Andrew Oakes was the medalist with a 38. Duluth Denfeld's Ryan Lundgren was a stroke back at 39.

The next LSC meet is 3 p.m. Wednesday at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth.

SHS Softball

The SHS softball team had its three-game win streak snapped with a 4-1 loss at Duluth East Thursday.

Taylor Thompson suffered the loss, allowing two hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Courtesy runner Kari Miller scored Superior only run in the fifth inning on a walk, passed ball and error by left fielder.

Alayna Moe and Kaitlyn Mergen singled for the Spartans.

East scored single runs in the first and second innings and twice in the sixth.

The Spartans play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. today at Eau Claire Memorial. They then play Northwestern at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Brule and host Proctor at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS junior varsity lost 9-8.

Girls soccer

Only one point has decided the last two games for the Superior High School girls soccer team.

On April 29, the Spartan girls faced the Hayward Hurricanes at Hayward. The game was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, but Hayward scored in extra time to win 3-2.

The Spartans were back in Superior Tuesday to take on Baldwin-Woodville and held their opponents scoreless to win 1-0. Allison Gotelaere scored the winning goal for Superior.

The Spartans played Barron on the road Thursday and host Osceola today at 4:30 p.m.

SHS track

The Superior High School boys track team finished first and the girls finished second at Tuesday's Lake Superior Conference quad meet at Proctor.

The Spartan boys won six events while the girls finished first in four. Raya Kosey was a two-time winner for Superior, finishing first in the 100 and 200.

The Spartans will compete next in the Hibbing Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.

On Thursday, the Northwestern Tigers hosted a pole vault meet that included athletes from Ashland, Superior and Northwestern.

Superior's Kevin Olson won the boys event, clearing 13 feet. Carolyn Prochaska of Northwestern took first in the girls event with a height of 9 feet.
