The Superior High School boys golf team was busy this weekend, finishing 10th in the two-day Northern Invitational at The Quarry at Giants Ridge and second in the Rice Lake Invitational Friday.

International Falls junior Glenn Walls shot 76 to finish with a two-day total of 147 and win medalist honors by six strokes at the Northern Invitational, which was hosted by Virginia High School.

Hermantown's Taylor Sundbom was runner-up at 153, helping lead the Hawks to a six-shot advantage over International Falls in the 23-team competition.

Superior finished scored 363 on Friday and 336 Saturday for a 699 total.

Chris Rochon was the Spartans' low golfer with an 82. Ethan Anderson and Mitch Kontny were next with 86s, Tim Mahan and Brandon Burd had 98s and John Rochon came in with a 106.

The Spartans also finished second in the Rice Lake tournament Friday at Turtle Back. The event was shortened to nine holes because of rain.

Eau Claire Memorial finished first with a score of 15-over-par. Superior tied with Hudson at 21-over-par to finish second.

"The event was a shotgun start so all the competitors started on different holes," SHS coach Dan Schulz said. "We began play in the most difficult section of the course. Our plan was to survive the opening stretch of holes with as many safe pars as possible. That would afford us an opportunity to play the final nine holes more aggressively because that stretch of holes generally offers more birdie opportunities.

"Unfortunately, the persistent rain shortened our round and we were unable to make a move over the final nine holes."

For Superior, Rob Kraft and Joel Pettingill were 4-over-par, Kontny was 5-over, Andy Heytens 8-over and Chris Rochon 9-over.

The Spartans are back in action Wednesday when the final 18 holes of the Lake Superior Conference tournament are played in Ashland.

Superior will then host the WIAA regional tournament on Tuesday, May 25 at the Nemadji Golf Course.
