Spartan girls to host U10 state hockey tournament

The Superior Spartan U10 girls hockey team has a busy playoff season ahead in the coming weeks, as they begin its own version of "March Madness" by hosting the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association's U10 Wisconsin Girls State Hockey Tournament this weekend at the Superior Ice Arena.

Superior hosts Appleton in the first game at 9 a.m. Saturday. Games run until 7 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday with the state championship game slated to start at 1:30 p.m.

Remaining teams in the tournament are Coulee Region, DC Diamonds, Hudson, Ice Spirit, Waukesha County Wolves and the Western Wisconsin Stars.

There is a small admission fee and all games will be webcasted in the ifan.tv network.

Shortly after the state tournament the Spartans will embark on winning their local playoff championship, and they are in good position to do so by virtue of their No. seed and first-round bye in the District 11 standings. Superior's first game is Tuesday, March 6 in Cloquet against the winner of Cloquet/Jr. Mirage Blue. The double-elimination playoff concludes the second week of March.

Members of the Superior U10 team are Brooklyn Burger, Charlesa Prior, Destiny Holmes, Carissa Mudrak, Clarie Casey, Rose Ion, Stephanie Paine, Isabel Fanta, Aily Rude, Jillian Reuille, Mackenzie Mike, Paige Lach, Morgan Love, Ava Gerard, Taylor Routley and Lucy Drougas.

The team is coached by Erica VanDamme, Doug Ion, Pat Casey and Kevin Mudrak.
