Spartan girls skate past Tomahawk

The Superior High School girls hockey team opened the WIAA tournament with an 11-0 win over the Tomahawk Hatchets Thursday night at the Superior Ice Arena.

The Superior High School girls hockey team opened the WIAA tournament with an 11-0 win over the Tomahawk Hatchets Thursday night at the Superior Ice Arena.

Superior got scoring from seven different players including two goals apiece from Ashley Martin, Ashlee Olson and Britnee Locken and one goal each from Amanda LeBard, Aleeah Baker, Alayna Moe, Emily Eisenmann and Jessica DeVinck.

DeVinck's goal is believed by SHS coaches to be the senior's first career goal. She's in her first year of playing hockey having played basketball through her junior year.

LeBard, Martin, Locken, Olson and Baker scored in the first period, Olson Moe, Martin, DeVinck and Locken scored in the second period and Eisenmann scored the only goal of the third period.

Notching their first assists of the season for Superior were Chelsey Jarzin, who helped out on Moe's tally, and Ashley Hadlock, who assisted on Eisenmann's score.

Janine Seifert finished with 11 saves for the Spartans, while Holly Jaecks had 31 for the Hatchets.

The Spartans will now play Hayward/Spooner at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hayward. The Hurricanes defeated the Spartans 1-0 earlier in the season and got a bye in the opening round of the playoffs.

"We're as healthy as we've been all season," SHS coach Scott VanDamme said. "Hopefully it stays that way. If does, we should be all right."

SPARTAN SPIN: The winner of Tuesday's game will play the winner of Rhinelander and Northland Pines in the sectional championship game Feb. 22 in Hayward. Rhinelander defeated Webster 1-0 in overtime Thursday night. ... Northland Pines defeated Superior 5-2 in last year's sectional championship game.
