Spartan girls lose opener

The Superior High School girls hockey team started its season with a 7-1 loss to the Eau Claire Area Stars Saturday afternoon at the Superior Ice Arena.

The Superior High School girls hockey team started its season with a 7-1 loss to the Eau Claire Area Stars Saturday afternoon at the Superior Ice Arena.

Haley Watkins, Macki Fadness and Camille Herzog scored two goals apiece to lead ECA. Liz Rosemore scored the Stars' seventh goal.

Fadness also dished out two assists and Matty Binder had one assist.

Sophomore Kari Miller scored Superior's goal when she poked home the rebound after senior Jenna Martin was stopped on a breakaway attempt. The goal tied the game 9:55 into the first period.

Superior's Sarah Runser played goaltender for the first time ever Saturday, finishing with 19 saves.

Jordyn Bunce and Rachel Rosemore combined on 13 saves for Eau Claire.

Superior was called for six minor penalties and Eau Claire had two penalties. Neither team scored on the power play.

The Spartans host Hayward at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
