The 14 members of the Spartan competition cheer team returned to Superior this week with medals around their necks.
The Superior High School team set a goal of making the podium this year at the Wisconsin Association Of Cheer/Pom Coaches state cheer meet, and the girls met that goal by finishing third in the cheer dance division Saturday in Green Bay. The SHS team also finished fifth in its stunting routine.
Spartan cheer coach Kelli Ritsche was ecstatic about her team's third place finish, saying it was the highest Superior had ever placed in its seven years of competing at the state meet.
Members of the state competition cheer squad are: Alexis Archambeau, Holly Bayless, Tay Boykin, Danielle Chisholm, Kaitlyn Corbett, Ellen Hagberg, Alesha Kotter, Shyann Robidoux, Becca Sash, Helana Semborski, Lexi Thompson, Katie Urbaniak, Hannah Vollmer and Nhia (Jennie) Xiong.
None of the girls on this year's team are seniors, which Ritsche said opens up a number of possibilities for Superior next year.

"We've already talked about that," Ritsche said. "They said, 'Just imagine where we'd start if everyone came back. We could just start from where we left off and be super good.'
"I said that's a really good point. That's kind of the goal we all have in our programs."
