The Superior High School softball team split a paor pf games Saturday at Rice Lake, winning the opener 5-1 and losing the second game 5-1.

The split leaves the Spartans with a 4-1 record heading into Tuesday's Lake Superior Conference contest at Duluth Central.

In the opener Saturday, Superior scored two runs in the fourth inning and three in the seventh. Rice Lake's lone run came in the seventh.

Amanda LeBard was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and five walks while striking out seven. Ashley Stodola took the loss for the Warriors, allowing seven hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Offensively for Superior, Taylor VanDamme hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, Ashley Martin and LeBard each went 2-for-3 and Britnee Blake and Ashlee Olson each had a hit.

Olson's safety to lead off the fourth inning was followed by VanDamme's home run.

In the seventh, Superior's Emily Eisenmann walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chelsey Jarzin and scored on LeBard's single. Alicia Cummings, who was running for LeBard, then scored on Martin's single.

Rice Lake's run came on a single, walk and a sac fly in the seventh.

In the second game, Rice Lake scored three runs in the third inning and single runs in the fifth and seventh frames.

Superior's only run came in the bottom of the seventh as VanDamme reached on an infield single, moved to second on Eisenmann's walk and scored on Chesley Jarzin's hit.

Stodola was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. LeBard took the loss, allowing seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks.

Martin was 2-for-3 and VanDamme and Jarzin had singles. For Rice Lake, Stodola knocked in three runs with a pair of triples.

SPARTAN SPIN: After Tuesday's game at Central, the Spartans host Hermantown at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. ... In JV action Saturday, SHS won the opener 11-1 and lost the second game 12-0. Aleeah Baker struck out 13 batters in the first game to pick up the win for the Spartans.
