Poor ice conditions led to two vehicles breaking through the ice in Superior two days apart.
Two men riding a snowmobile fell through the ice at the 28th Street boat landing Thursday morning. The men, ages 77 and 84, were able to get back onto the ice and walk to shore on their own, according to a report by Sgt. Matt Derosia of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. Both declined medical attention, but the snowmobile remained at the bottom of the river.
The incident was reported at about 7:40 a.m. March 26. When Derosia arrived, he saw fire department personnel walking off the ice with the two men. The driver told the sergeant that he had driven out a short distance onto the ice and the sled fell through.
Friday morning, a four-wheeler broke through the ice of Kilner Bay. Deputy Jesse Jarrell with the sheriff's office responded to the call at 9:27 a.m. March 27.
The owner of the machine told Jarrell his friend had been driving the machine around on the ice giving his son a ride when the rear of the machine broke through the ice. The man and his son were able to get off the machine to safe ice without incident. No injuries were reported. The owner was in the process of trying to retrieve the machine from the ice before it became completely submerged.
