As one round of snow winds down across the Northland this morning, another - potentially bigger - storm system is taking aim at the region for the weekend.
The snow that fell overnight has added up to 4.4 inches at the Duluth airport as of 6 a.m., with snow totals of 2 to 7 inches expected across the Northland, the National Weather Service said. Some patchy freezing drizzle is possible in Northwestern Wisconsin this morning.
Winter weather advisories remain in effect for most of the Northland through noon, with a winter storm warning along the North Shore where heavier snow totals are expected.

Roads are snow-covered and slippery across the region, the Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of transportation reported, as plows continue to work to clear the snow from overnight.
Some school districts and colleges in the region canceled or delayed the start of classes because of the snow.
The precipitation is expected to quickly end from south to north across the region, generally ending by late morning.
Once it ends, the focus turns to a storm system that is forecast to bring heavy snow to parts of the Northland from late Saturday into Sunday.
Snow is expected to move in from the southwest Saturday afternoon and evening, with the heaviest snow expected from Saturday night into Sunday morning. The snow should taper off later Sunday morning.
As of Friday morning, the Weather Service reported that “the highest snowfall accumulations are expected across much of northwest Wisconsin, along the I-35 corridor and along the North Shore of Lake Superior, where 8 to 12 inches are possible.”
To the west, a snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected. However, the Weather Service cautioned that there remains some uncertainty in the exact location and timing of the heaviest snow.
Winter storm watches are in effect for much of the Northland from Saturday into Sunday. The Twin Cities also is expected to see heavy snow from the weekend storm.
