The Duluth Clinic Foundation is honoring Brian Konowalchuk, M.D., as 2010 Educator of the Year and Al Deibele, M.D., as Researcher of the Year.

The awards recognize outstanding work that contributes to health care excellence in the region and exemplifies quality medical research and education.

Konowalchuk, an SMDC occupational medicine specialist, was recognized for his role in organizing weekly educational conferences.

Deibele, an interventional cardiologist at the SMDC Heart & Vascular Center, was honored for his research.

"It was a distinct pleasure to be nominated and receive the Educator of the Year award," Konowalchuk said. "Truthfully, however, I am accepting this award on behalf of all of the physicians who participate in our Friday morning and noon-hour conferences. It is their expertise and efforts that continue to make these events first-class."

The Friday morning sessions, instrumental in educating staff physicians and those in residency, contribute to community medical education. The Friday noon-hour seminars give Duluth Clinic physicians the opportunity to listen to medical lectures from their colleagues.

Deibele was recognized for his research in treating some heart patients with an anticoagulant. The research was recently featured in the prestigious medical journal "Circulation."

"For me, it's incredible to be honored as Researcher of the Year and I'm humbled to be considered," Deibele said. "If we're going to do better and improve the care of patients, the only way that can be done is through research."

Konowalchuk and Deibele each received a certificate of appreciation and a grant of $5,000 to be used for future educational and research activities.
