Six straight wins for Spartan baseball team

CLOQUET -- The Superior High School baseball team made it six wins in a row with a 5-4 win over the Cloquet Lumberjacks Thursday evening at Ed Mittner Field.

After losing their opening game to Duluth Denfeld, the Spartans have now won six straight games to improve to 6-1. They are also in first place in the Lake Superior Conference with a 4-1 record.

Cloquet, which entered the game ranked No. 12 among AA teams in Minnesota, falls to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the LSC.

SHS starting pitcher Ryan Myhre picked up the win. He allowed four runs, struck out four and walked five before leaving with two outs in the sixth inning.

Freshman Grant Rindal took over for Myhre and retired the first batter he faced in the sixth, then struck out three of the four batters he faced in the seventh to pick up the save.


Offensively the Spartans got a pair of RBI singles from Taylor Olson, two singles and an RBI from Marty Manion and RBI singles from Rob Dembroski and Zach Magdzas.

Nick Sitek and Nolan Holcombe also singled and scored a pair of runs.

August Reynolds had two hits and an RBI, Joe Singpiel had an RBI double, and Peter LaCourse, Tyler Tollerud, Thomas Rogers and Connor Stowell had a hit apiece for Cloquet.

Superior took a 1-0 lead in the second as Sitek walked, stole second and scored on Manion's two-out single.

After Cloquet tied it up 1-1 in the third on a Corbin Morse sac fly, Superior took a 4-1 lead in the fourth on RBI singles by Magdzas, Olson and Dembroski.

Cloquet got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a Spartan error and a Reynolds single.

Cloquet threatened to score again in the fifth with runners on first and third and one out. But Myhre got out of the jam by getting Cloquet to hit into a 5-4-3 double play.

The Spartans' final run came in the sixth as Holcombe was hit by a pitch, moved to third on Manion's hit and scored on Olson's single.


Cloquet made it 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth as Reynolds reached on an infield single and scored on Singpiel's double. Rindal then replaced Myhre and got LaCourse to ground out.

Rindal then struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh and gave up a single to Rogers before striking out the final batter.

Rogers took the complete-game loss for Cloquet, allowing eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

The Spartans will play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Monday at Menomonie then play Duluth Denfeld at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wade Stadium.

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV won 3-2. Spencer Severson picked up the win in relief and Jordan McDonald pitched a scoreless seventh for the save. Dan Kreidler and Trent Olson each had two hits and a run scored and Clayton Yeazle added a hit and a run scored.
