Sister Mary Katharine Maloney, 86, of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, St. Rose Convent died on Aug. 18, 2008, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse.
She was born May 2,1922, to Dennis and Katharine (McAndrews) Maloney in Superior.
Sister Mary Kay attended St. Patrick's Grade School and Cathedral High School. She entered the St. Rose Convent in La Crosse in 1940. Mary Katharine was received into the novitiate in 1941 and was given the name Sister Marian. She later returned to her baptismal name. She pronounced her vows in 1943 and made final profession of vows in 1949. She celebrated her 60th jubilee in 2003 having served her community of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration for 66 years.
Sister Mary Kay received her bachelor's of music at Viterbo College in La Crosse and master's of education from Northwestern University in Evanston, lll. Her career encompassed many years as a music teacher in piano, violin and vocals. She taught at the Cathedral School, Superior during the 1970s.
She acted as director of religious education and parish minister in Prescott, Wis. in the 1980s. She served with the Sharing and Caring program in Minneapolis from 1989-1997. She formally retired at St. Rose Convent in 1997 and to the Villa St. Joseph's in La Crosse in 2000.

Members of the community, family, colleagues, students and friends remember Sister Mary Kay as an effective teacher and loyal community member.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents, Dennis and Katharine Maloney; her sisters Delores Eibon and Roseann Van Damme; niece Maureen Massoglia; and nephews, Dennis and Thomas John Van Damme.
Sister Mary Kay is survived by nieces and nephews, Nancy (Daniel) Connolly, Mary (Randolph) Zuber, David (Barbara) Eibon, Diane (Maurice) Sharrow, William F. (Lori) Van Damme of Superior and Mary Jill (Mark) Monaghan of Titusville, Fla.; and many loving great-nieces and nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at St. Rose Convent in La Crosse beginning with a prayer vigil followed by a Rosary at 3 p.m. today. A vigil service at 7 p.m. will also be held today. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday.
