SHS wins a close one over Proctor

The Superior High School volleyball team came out on top in a back and forth battle with the Proctor Rails Tuesday night at Proctor. The Spartans eventually defeated Proctor 3-2, with the last three games all decided by two points.

The Superior High School volleyball team came out on top in a back and forth battle with the Proctor Rails Tuesday night at Proctor. The Spartans eventually defeated Proctor 3-2, with the last three games all decided by two points.

"It was a hard fought battle," SHS coach Lindsay Peterson said. "The momentum changed hands many times."

Proctor started the match with the momentum on its side as it won the first game, 25-19. The Spartans came back to win the second game by a comfortable 25-13 margin, but the Rails reclaimed a one-game advantage by taking the third game 25-23. Superior stayed alive by winning the fourth game, 26-24, and then took the match with a 15-13 win in the final game.

Amy Schweikert had the most kills for Superior with six, but Taylor Kosey and Sarah Ann Johnson were close behind with five kills each. Kosey also added 15 digs on the night, and Johnson had four ace serves and four ace blocks. Caitlin Keute finished with four kills and 10 set assists, and Caitlin Vaughan recorded three kills.

Sara Strand led the Spartans in set assists with 17 and also had two ace serves. Ashlee Olson tied Kosey for most digs with 15 and also had two ace serves. Kara Hoff added 11 digs and Nicole Levine had 10 digs. For Proctor Brooke Morin had nine ace serves, while Mindy Clark and Ally Gellatly each had three kills apiece.

The Spartans will play at Eau Claire Memorial at 7 p.m. Thursday in the WIAA regional playoffs.
