The Superior High School girls swimming team held a lead over the Duluth East Greyhounds for more than half of Tuesday evening's contest in the SHS natatorium before falling 105-81.

Superior's Karen VanOvermeiren and Faydra Lagro placed 1-2 in the 100 butterfly, both with personal best times, and swam fly legs of the 1-2 200 medley relay teams.

Christina Case won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke as the Spartans' only double winner. Kristine Polkoski scored her best score, and narrowly missed first in diving.

Emily Noble, Kelly Nys, Ashley Russell and Kaleena Eck had significant improvements during the contest.

"On paper East had us by a much larger margin," SHS coach George Lehman said. "The girls performed well and made Duluth work for their victory."
