PROCTOR -- The Superior High School boys hockey team notched its sixth win in its last seven games with a 5-1 win Tuesday night at Proctor.
After completing a stretch of four games in six days this past weekend, the Spartans (8-3 overall, 1-1 in the Lake Superior Conference) have three more games this week. To go along with the win at Proctor, Superior hosts Duluth Central at 8 p.m. Thursday and Hudson at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Pat Dalbec and Jake Mergen scored two goals each and Tyler Plunkett added another for Superior.
Mergen's goals were the first of his varsity career.
The Spartans struck first as Dalbec put the puck in off the pads of Proctor goaltender Derek Robinson after taking a mid-ice pass from Jake Tollas, a sophomore defenseman.

Proctor tied it up on Luke Davidson's goal less than two minutes later.
Plunkett gave Superior the lead for good when he put home the rebound of a shot by Tyler Leuthner. Dan Kolenda also assisted.
Dalbec scored again in the second period with help from Chris Bishop and Kellen McCoshen.
Mergen was assisted by Nate Miner on his first goal and Justin Cannon on his second. Cannon's assist was also his first varsity point.
Joel Pettingill picked up his third straight win in goal for the Spartans with 17 saves. Robinson had 27 saves for Proctor.
SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartans lost Tollas to a wrist injury. His status will be reevaluated Wednesday. ... Senior defenseman Kyle Walkowiak took some ribbing from teammates when he put what is believed to be his first shot on goal of the season. ... The SHS JV won 3-2. Branden Viklun, Andrew Dalbec and Joel Broberg scored Superior. Taylor Olson had two assists and Andrew Bronson and Eric Quam had on apiece. Tony Ledin was the winning goalie with 10 saves. ... Olson suffered a dislocated pinky while blocking a shot near the end of the JV game. The injury didn't keep the sophomore from playing in the varsity game.

The Spartans put the finishing touches on a busy week Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena with an 8-2 win over the Eau Claire North Huskies
The Spartans, playing their fourth game in six days, got two goals apiece from Bishop and Leuthner.
McCoshen, Dan Kolenda, Plunkett and Miner also scored for the Spartans, who finished third in the Duluth Marshall Hilltopper Holiday Classic earlier in the week.
Matt Miller picked up the win in goal for Superior, finishing with 25 saves. Ben Brenizer and Spencer Gregerson combined on 34 saves for the Huskies.
SPARTAN SPIN: ECN falls to 4-3 on the season. ... The SHS junior varsity won 8-0. Kyle Wilander scored three goals and dished out an assists. Kyle Halom added two goals and Viklun, Dalbec and Cannon had a goal apiece. Olson and Cannon dished out two assists apiece and Bronson, Brandon Burd, Viklun, Quam and Broberg had an assist each. Scott Crawford had 10 saves for Superior while Spencer Gregerson had 51 for North.

DULUTH -- The Superior High School boys hockey team finished in third place in the Duluth Marshall Hilltopper Holiday Classic with a 4-1 over the Madison Edgewood Crusaders on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Picking up his win was Pettingill, who finished with 18 saves. He lost his shutout bid when Cody Strang scored unassisted with 6:33 remaining in the third period.

Superior improved to 6-3 on the season, while Edgewood, which was ranked No. 1 in Wisconsin, falls to 5-2-1. After defeating Proctor 8-2 in Thursday's quarterfinals, Edgewood was sent to the third-place game with a 3-1 loss to the host Hilltoppers.
The Spartans, ranked No. 9 in Wisconsin when the week began, defeated New Ulm 4-2 and lost Appleton 6-2.
Superior took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission thanks to a pair of power-play goals.
Kontny took a centering pass from Dalbec and scored from the left circle 1:23 into the game, and four minutes later Dalbec put the puck in off the pads of Edgewood goaltender Brad Jerzewski from the left boards.
Kontny and Dalbec were at it once again in the second period as Kontny put home his fourth goal of the season with a Dalbec assist.
Leuthner gave Superior a 4-0 lead when he got by Madison's defense and put a back-hander over goaltender Brad Jerzewski 2:44 into the third period.
Jerzewski finished with 34 saves for Edgewood.
Superior hosts Eau Claire North at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
