SHS gymnast narrowly misses state meet

The Superior High School gymnastics team concluded its season in Rice Lake Feb. 23 at the WIAA Division 1 sectional meet. A total of nine teams competed in the event.

"Unfortunately, we had no one advance to state," said Lynda Ritsche, manager of the SHS team.

The top competitor from the Spartan team was senior Emily Copperud. She finished sixth on the balance beam with a score of 8.40, missing a trip to the state meet by just .025 of a point.

"She was really upset, as she had put a lot of work into it, especially the last couple of weeks," Ritsche said. "That was her favorite event to compete on, in hopes to go to state and her last year on the high school team, so it was a quiet ride home for her."

Copperud also placed 11th on the floor, vault and all-around and 12th on the bars.

As a whole, Ritsche said the Spartans' team score dropped slightly in the meet. The drop was due in part to the absence of freshman Shana Soul, who became ill the night before the meet. SHS finished with a team score of 109.95.

"In all, I think the girls pulled off a nice season and should be very proud of themselves as well as our school," Ritsche said. "Even though we didn't have anyone score high enough to go to state, they did a great job in representing our team and school."
