The Superior High School girls basketball team opened its season with a 58-51 win over the Hudson Raiders Friday afternoon in Hudson.

The Spartans were led on offense by freshmen Jessica Lindstrom and Hailey Kontny, who finished with 16 points apiece. Junior Sammy DeMeyer chipped in with nine points, Allison Gotelaere had seven, Raya Kosey and Cassy O'Neill had four points apiece and Kallyn Lagro added two.

Lindstrom also grabbed 18 rebounds and Kontny garnered 14 boards.

"Today's victory was a total team effort," SHS coach Dan Schulz said. "But I was really impressed with the rebounding from our freshmen; they battled hard underneath and were determined to get after every rebound and loose ball.

"Sammy also played a complete game with five rebounds, three steals and two assists, all while defending Hudson's most explosive scorer for the majority of the second half."

Jessie Kirkwood led the Raiders with 18 points.

Hudson led 15-14 after one quarter, but the Spartans opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Gotelaere and Kontny and a basket by DeMeyer.

The Spartans extended the lead to 34-23 at intermission then opened a 15-point lead at 41-26 in the third quarter.

"I give Hudson credit, they have a nice team and they battled hard for 32 minutes," Schulz said. "I was pleased to see our relatively young, inexperienced team withstand their run, maintain our composure and finish out a tough win against a quality opponent on the road to start our season."

Schulz also noted the play of Kosey. "She did an excellent job running the point," Schulz said. "She handled Hudson's pressure without committing a turnover and distributed five assists.

"Abby Clemons, Lagro and Goteleare also made valuable contributions for us coming off the bench."

The Spartans are back in action on Friday, Dec. 10 when they host the Northwestern Tigers at 7:30 p.m.
