The Superior High School girls basketball took over first place in the Lake Superior Conference with a 44-39 win Thursday night at Ashland.

The Spartans, 9-5 overall and 7-1 in the LSC, have 18 points in the LSC, two better than Proctor (7-10, 6-2). Ashland (5-8, 3-3) drops into a tie for third place with Hermantown (12-7, 6-1) with 12 points.

Rachel Samuelson led Superior with 16 points. Laura Amys added nine points, Taylor Kosey and Britnee Blake had eight apiece and Bettye Nelson, Kara Hoff and Shannon Lehikoinen each had one.

"Rachel played outstanding in every facet of the game," SHS coach Dan Schulz said. "She not only led us in scoring but also in rebounds with 11 and blocks with five. She absolutely dominated inside for us, if we get that kind of production from her every night this team can reach the next level."

Superior led 17-14 at the half then outscored the Oredockers 27-25 in the second half.

"I was pleased to have a three-point lead at the half because I felt like we rushed some things early and we were starting to pass the ball better in the interior of their zone late in the half," Schulz said. "Taylor made a basket in the short corner at the end of the half which provided momentum and also helped the girls realize at the break where their zone was vulnerable."

Amys fouled out with 5:18 remaining in the game and Superior holding a 39-31 advantage.

"It was a total team effort, especially down the stretch," Schulz said. "I'm so proud of the way the girls composed themselves at the end of the game. We refused to back down, we played physical and earned a much needed conference victory against a well coached tough basketball team on the road."

The Spartans host Duluth Marshall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
