The Superior High School girls hockey team opened the season with a 3-1 win Friday night at Appleton.

With Appleton leading 1-0, Ashley Martin tied things up with a short-handed goal with :00.01 remaining in the first period.

Ashlee Olson scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 12:00 of the second period and Aleeah Baker sealed the victory another short-hander with 1:05 remaining in the third period.

"We were kind of sluggish in the first half of the first period, but we played well after that," SHS coach Scott VanDamme said. "We may have eased back a bit at the end of the game, but overall, it wasn't too bad."

Ali Bergmann scored Appleton's goal at 6:27 of the first period.

Janine Seifert had 16 saves for Superior and Molly Mandoli 28 for Appleton.

The Spartans are back in action at 10 a.m. today against Onalaska.

"Overall we didn't play too bad, but now we'll see how we can do playing back-to-back," VanDamme said.

The Spartans' home opener is at 8 p.m. Friday against Fond du Lac.
