Sanitary sewer overflows occurred at two lift stations along Superior’s East Second Street corridor, Lift Stations Nos. 5 and 6.
Lift Station No. 5 is located near Newton Creek where the overflow starting around 12:30 a.m. April 10 and continued to overflow until about 8:45 p.m. April 12. The overflow at Lift Station No. 6 near the Nemadji River occurred from about 7:10 a.m. April 10 until about 2 p.m. April 13.
A high amount of inflow from rain and melting snow overwhelmed the sewer system. Superior Environmental Services Division personnel responded to the incident and stopped the overflow. They continue to monitor the situation. All necessary steps are being taken to limit any health hazard or harmful effects on the environment.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was notified.
Residents should avoid contact with sanitary sewer overflow to avoid exposure to disease-causing organisms.
