The University of Minnesota Duluth's University for Seniors is turning 20.
University for Seniors, an educational program for adults over the age of 50, sponsored by the Continuing Education Department on the UMD campus, launches its 20th year celebration at the annual fall convocation on Sept. 6. Featured speaker for the event is Arthur L. Peterson, a national Learning in Retirement expert and brother to charter member and past president, Gertrude Jacobson.
He collaborated in the development of University for Seniors. The convocation program, which begins at 10 a.m., is preceded at 9 a.m. by a coffee and the opportunity to visit with fall study group leaders. The event is open to the public.
University for Seniors fall term is scheduled from Sept. 29-Nov. 21. Members can choose from 46 study groups that meet for two hours, once a week, for eight weeks. In addition many lectures, field trips, and social events are planned. Membership has grown to 390 members who register for more than 2,200 study groups throughout the year. There is no stress of tests or grades, just learning for the joy of it. Special "Twenty Year" events are scheduled during each month of the 2008-09 year.
