SENIOR: Local women honored

Audrey Hakkila and Janice LaGesse were recognized at the annual volunteer luncheon, held at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Hakkila and LaGesse both served on the board for the Aging Resource Center for Douglas County. Hakkila of Poplar served on board for six years and takes an active role as an advocate for seniors in Douglas County. She has served as chairwoman of the Finance Committee and on the Nutrition Advisory Executive Committee. She not only has been involved with the agency as a board member, but is directly involved with the agency's meal sites, serving as a backup for the site manager in Wentworth and Lake Nebagamon. Hakkila is very involved in her community, her church in the Poplar and Wentworth areas, the ?Historical Society and the Brule Heritage Society. LaGesse has served two terms on the Aging Resource Center board and has also been involved in the Finance Committee, nutrition programs, transportation and has worked as an outreach specialist for the agency. LaGesse, along with her husband Jerry, have worked with the agency benefit specialist to help residents of Douglas County improve on safety features in their homes. Jerry LaGesse has insalled grab bars and implementated other items, which help to make residents of Douglas County homes more accessible and safer. LaGesse coordinated these projects along with filing the appropriate paperwork for these projects. The money that funds these projects comes from the United Way of Superior/Douglas County.
