Robert "Bob" S. Goligoski, 90, longtime Superior area resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

He was born Dec. 10, 1917, in Browerville, Minn., to Thomas and Anna (Janikula) Goligoski.

He graduated from Superior Cathedral High School and the Superior State University receiving his bachelor of science degree in 1948.

While growing up he worked in his parents' grocery store. He also worked in Washington, D.C. and for the Internal Revenue Service in St. Paul and most recently was a business owner in Superior for many years.

He enlisted in the Army Air Force in May of 1942 and proudly served his country with the 857th Engineering Battalion as lieutenant platoon commander during World War II serving in New Guinea, Manila and the Philippines. While serving he helped build airstrips, roads and a hospital.

He married Mary Lorraine Hunker and recently celebrated 58 years of marriage.

He was a 50-year member of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Elks Club, VFW and the American Legion.

Bob enjoyed a full life that included traveling to Europe, Saudi Arabia and Australia. His passions in life included politics, music, sports, family and friends and the written word.

Whether it was bowling a 700 or hitting a hole-in-one at the Nemadji Golf Course, Bob was always eager to participate or watch sports of any kind with a special fondness for hockey. He took great pride in his own endeavors but especially those of his children and grandchildren as well.

Bob was happiest with family around him. He would take every opportunity to attend school or sporting events of his children and grandchildren.

Bob will be remembered as a true gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor and work ethic. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by those who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, three sisters and his son, Peter.

Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Lorraine; two sons, Robert (Agnes) Goligoski, Alpharetta, Ga., and Dan (Paula) Goligoski, Grand Rapids, Minn.; three daughters, Linda Goligoski, Aiken, Minn., Sara (Bob) Hall, Superior and Rachel (Greg Trentman) Goligoski, St. Paul; 13 grandchildren, Lisa, Stacy, Mike, Kelly, Rebecca, Krysta, Anna, Katy, Nick, Alex, Colin, Marguerite and Gabrielle; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Ave., Superior and continues until the 10:30 a.m. Celebration of Life with the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Pallbearers for the service will be Bob's grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cathedral School or to St. Luke's Hospice.
