This past week, many Christians around the country commemorated the annual National Day of Prayer by gathering at local courthouses and praying for our leaders and the needs of our respective communities. It was a wonderful event that enabled Christians of all denominations to gather together in unity and pray to the God we serve.
Looking back at it, however, it made me pause and reflect. Why do we need a day of prayer? I mean, the connotation is that we only pray together this one day and not the other 364 days in the year. Do we lift those in authority in prayer during the rest of the year? My hope is that the answer to that question would be yes. Prayer shouldn't be something we do just on one day or whenever we're in a bind and need God to bail us out. Prayer is one of our means of communicating with God out of the relationship that we have with Him and should be done on a regular basis. If you were in a relationship with someone and they only talked to you when they needed something, how would that make you feel? The same is true with God. We should talk to him everyday.
So, I want to encourage you to spend at least 10-15 minutes a day talking to God like He was your best friend and the Almighty God that He is. You'll be amazed at how God works through situations and circumstances that you face every day.
