Regents confirm Markwood as UWS interim chancellor

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents on May 6 gave final approval to the appointment of Dr. Christopher Markwood as interim chancellor for the University of Wisconsin-Superior beginning in August.

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents on May 6 gave final approval to the appointment of Dr. Christopher Markwood as interim chancellor for the University of Wisconsin-Superior beginning in August.

Markwood, the university's provost, vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of faculty since 2006, will assume the role of interim chancellor when UWS Chancellor Julius Erlenbach retires Aug. 1. UW System President Kevin Reilly announced Markwood's appointment last month pending approval of the regents at the May meeting.

"This is an exciting time to be at UW Superior," Markwood said. "Although we will all miss Chancellor Erlenbach, we expect him to return to campus frequently. His legacy will continue this next year as we prepare to open Swenson Hall, expand our continuous improvement efforts, further reach out to our alumni and community partners, and proudly prepare our students for their careers and for life."

Following the regents' approval at their monthly meeting, UW-Superior announced that three campus leaders will take on interim administrative duties to assist Markwood during the transition period while a new chancellor is hired. They are:

  • Dr. Faith Hensrud will become interim provost, vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of faculties. She currently is associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and outreach.
  • Dr. Peter Nordgren will assume a 50-percent role as interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and outreach. He currently is associate dean for distance learning and continuing education.
  • Sheryl Homan will assume a 50-percent role as interim director of continuing education. She currently is a program manager for the Center for Continuing Education/Extension. UW System President Reilly is working with the regents and the UWS campus community to begin a search for the new chancellor, aiming to identify a new campus leader by summer 2011. The first step is to appoint a search-and-screen committee comprised of faculty, academic staff, classified staff, students, and community representatives. Following an exhaustive national search, the committee will recommend a slate of finalists for consideration by Reilly and a special committee of Regents. The appointment of a new chancellor must then be approved by the full Board of Regents.
