Recycling programs to be revisited following governor's proposal

State Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp says Republicans have asked her for some new recommendations about a controversial recycling plan in the governor's proposed state budget.

State Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp says Republicans have asked her for some new recommendations about a controversial recycling plan in the governor's proposed state budget.

Governor Scott Walker angered many supporters of recycling when he proposed eliminating the money the state gives local governments to run recycling programs. Yet, Walker says state residents would still have to keep recyclable materials out of state garbage dumps and incinerators.

Some Republican lawmakers say they won't back Walker's proposal. DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp says her staff has been asked to work on a compromise.

Wednesday, DNR board members peppered agency staff with concerns about Walker's proposal. The DNR says more state residents may have to take their old bottles, cans, and papers to recycling centers, or pay waste haulers more to do so.
