Jody Forsythe, president of the Ashland Chapter EL of the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO), announced the recipient of the 2018 Community Partnership Scholarship to Heather Ranta from South Shore High School. Ranta will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Superior this fall and pursuing a career in early elementary education.
"Becoming a teacher would be my biggest dream," Ranta wrote in her essay. " I decided that I wanted to become a teacher when I thought about my kindergarten teacher. Even though I was so little, she was a big part in sculpting who I am today. I would love to be the one to make that great of an impact on a child's life. I want to become a teacher to help sculpt the future generations."
PEO was founded Jan. 21, 1869, by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. Today, PEO has grown from that tiny membership of seven to nearly a quarter of a million members in chapters throughout the United States and Canada, with headquarters in Des Moines.
