Ralph E. Kelley Jr., 94, formerly of Superior, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, in Mercy Hospital.

He was born May 18, 1913, in Crookston, Minn., son of the late Ralph E. and Ida Matheson Kelley. He was educated in Superior schools and was a graduate of the Missouri School Mines in Rolla, Mo. He moved to Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and then to Toledo, Ohio, working for U.S. Gypsum Co. from 1940 to 1946.

He moved to West Springfield in 1946, working as chief engineer for Lane Trap Rock for 36 years, retiring in 1982.

Ralph also worked on the Great Northern Railroad from 1929-1935, mainly at the iron ore docks on Lake Superior.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church since 1947 where he was active on many boards and committees, the Mt. Orthodox Masons Lodge, the F.O.R.M. Club and was an active fisherman.

He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Audrey K. (Schwenk) Kelley.

He leaves his second wife, Anne H. (Hardy) Kelley of Hampton, N.H.; his children, Alan R. Kelley and his wife, Carol of Shutesbury, Mass., and Madelyn Miller and her husband Harvey of West Springfield; his daughter-in-law, Susan Kelley, Westfield; three grandchildren, Todd L. Sargent of Somerville, Mass., Mark W. Sargent, Palmyra, Va., and Joanna K. Ryals of Arden Hills, Minn.; five great grandchildren, Joshua Sargent, Tara Sargent, Nina Sargent, Morgan Ryals and Mitchell Ryals; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson Scott J. Kelley.

The funeral was held Wednesday at First Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, 20 Lathrop St., West Springfield, MA 01089.
